Drawing is both a means of communication and as a tool for problem solving. By drawing, we are able to see and put into paper what we are thinking. We also get to play around with our ideas and be extra creative about it! As a problem solving tool, drawing allows us to visualize our ideas, think of solutions more clearly and give it structure as we breathe life into it.
Why should you learn how to draw? Let our reasons below enlighten you!
Drawing helps us discover the joy of creating. Given the world we live in today largely dominated by technology and where time is spent largely in front of mobile phones, tablets and TVs, there is that tendency to just sit, watch and wait for things to happen. Drawing saves us from such passivity, teaching us to become more motivated to create, put our imagination to work and make opportunities instead of waiting them to arrive.
Drawing fosters self-esteem and confidence. Especially for young learners discovering the wonderful world of drawing, being able to say "Teacher, I was able to draw this!" or "I can draw something like that too!" gives them a sense of achievement. As we become more confident, we become less afraid to make mistakes. We also get to realize that while it is inevitable to make mistakes, it can be fixed and it can even help us discover new ideas! We learn to innovate and become used to it!
Drawing also teaches us to think better. When our hands are drawing, our mind is actively generating ideas and thinking of new things! Also biologically, when our mind is at work, we grow more neurons, helping us become smarter!
For young artists, drawing enhances their fine motor skills. Try giving a one year old some paper and crayons and allow them to scribble. Pretty soon, they will be able to hold and control their drawing tools better as this simple activity helps in the development of their hands, fingers and arm muscles. When they get a little older, they can do finer details on their drawings, which in turn enhances their fine motor skills or muscle memory.
