There is no doubt that arts and crafts make kids happy. But there’s more to arts and crafts than the giggles and the dirty fingers it brings. When Art Smart was starting out, Aubrey Rose Bea Decloedt, Art Smart’s founder, teacher and mother of two, had one of the rooms in her house as her classroom and art studio. As young as two years old, her two kids would join her art classes, just making doodles using paper and art materials readily available in the classroom. Allowing them to join was not just to keep them busy. Aubrey knew then that letting her kids create is important to their development. So, what are the benefits of exposing kids to arts and crafts at a very young age? Provides the foundation for their future learning. Of course, arts and crafts for a two year old are more of a past time since playing outdoors is not yet ideal for them. Holding a paintbrush, a pencil or a crayon is a great example of early arts and crafts assisting in the development and improvement of fine motor skills in kids, and this will carry to other situations that need hand-eye coordination. The grip will come in naturally, and they don't even have to learn how to write their name yet in order to do this! Pretty soon, you might witness developmental milestones such as learning to draw circles expected at age three or cutting around the edges of a square using safety scissors expected at age four at a much earlier time in your kids. Improves concentration. Isn't it a challenge to keep kids still and in one place? Show them colors - paint, colored pencils or crayons - and they will stay at it for a long time. Colorful things are known to catch the interest and attention of kids! Improving a child's concentration is not just for discipline, but it will be instrumental once they start going to school where they are expected to complete tasks independently. Aubrey's daughter, Kaela, was introduced to art when she was two. At age three, she can complete an art for two hours without interruptions. She is now seven years old and can do a variety of activities on her own, which leads us to the third benefit! Teach kids to be confident in their uniqueness and skills while they are still young. This will positively affect the different areas of their lives as they grow up. Encourages inventiveness. Art not only encourages kids to express themselves, but it also teaches them to take risks in its creation. To a degree, learning how to take risks also leads to another type of learning - learning how to innovate - which will be important once kids grow up to be adults. Boosts confidence. When it comes to art, there are no right and wrong answers. Art allows kids to express themselves and use their imagination without restrictions. Kids also naturally take pride and develop a sense of accomplishment the moment they see the fruits of their labor. After an art class, it’s also good for parents to hang their kids’ artwork at home either by the wall or the refrigerator door. Proud parents equal to confident kids. Inventive people are those who seek new ways to improve the things around them or new ways to solve problems. We need more inventive people in our society, and not just people trained to follow orders and directions. Improves academic performance. According to the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NSAA), kids with more involvement in the arts perform better on standardized achievement tests than kids with low or no arts involvement at all. In one of NSAA's studies, kids who took art classes reportedly have higher math and verbal scores in their SATs than kids who did not take any art classes. Raise smart, confident and inventive kids by immersing them in arts and crafts early on in their lives. These benefits (and more!) are much to be awaited for! Starting October 6, 2015 until December, we will be holding Special Arts and Crafts Classes exclusively for kids aged 2.5 to 4 years old! Check out our schedules below. Limited slots only! Here at Art Smart, we believe that true art takes time. That’s why we are happy whenever parents enroll their children while they are still young, and feel proud and fortunate to witness their growth as they learn more about the craft. Another reason that makes us grateful is when parents keep us updated with the progress of their children, like Joy Uy de Baron on her daughter, Nadia. In 2012, Joy enrolled Nadia in Art Smart. Nadia was 9 years old at that time. Below are Nadia's paintings with Art Smart from 2012 to 2014. They recently migrated to New Zealand, and Joy has been looking for an art school that fits Nadia best. However, most of the art schools Joy approached had qualms in accepting Nadia. Apparently, the training Nadia received from Art Smart made her too young for the advanced courses and overqualified for the classes designed for her age. Since they think that “she’s too young to take painting seriously”, Nadia now takes lessons from her grandmother, Sannie Ty, who is a renowned artist in New Zealand. Nadia loves challenging herself when it comes to painting. She chooses her own subjects, and this Zalameda-inspired piece took her only six hours to complete. "Art Smart did a wonderful job in nurturing Nadia's love for painting", Joy says. "And we will definitely invite you (Art Smart) if that happy event happens!”, Joy further exclaims when we teased her that Nadia should have her own art exhibit very soon. Below are paintings Nadia made under instruction from her grandmother and artist, Sannie Ty: To keep things challenging and exciting for this budding young artist, Nadia's grandmother is now teaching her to do human figures and faces. And here at Art Smart, we know that Nadia will prove, once again, that age is not a limitation in terms of how good one can be when it comes to learning and more so in painting. Keep it up, Nadia! We are extremely proud of your progress! Kindly click on this link to know our rates or call us at (02)7886766 or 09178784766 for custom packages.
Here's the year-round schedule of regular classes here at Art Smart. Kids may come to class once or twice a day. Choose from 12 1-hour classes or 6 2-hour classes. Fees includes materials.
Keep checking our website and like our Facebook page for regular updates. Thank you and see you in the studio! :) Last Saturday , Art Smart had a full house! This is how it is especially on summer breaks and almost all Saturdays! As you can see in the photo below, it's a good mix of different age groups painting altogether! There is an advantage to this . Instead of kids competing because of the same age groups, kids and adults tend to get encouraged and inspired. Art Smart conducts art classes for different age groups, ranging from 4 years old to 80 years old. We have mother and child, grandmother and granddaughter, and school classmates doing art class together . Small ARTS AND CRAFTS parties are also held here . Painting is a great time for barkada or family bonding ! |
