How to Keep Your Teenager Busy this Summer

4/5/2016

Summer is definitely in the air. The hot weather immediately gives it away! Now that kids are on their much needed break from school, it would be great if they are occupied with activities that will hone their interests and their untapped potentials. Especially for teenagers, this phase of coming-of-age is the most opportune time for self-discovery, and as parents, it will be doubly amazing if you can guide them towards their journey into adulthood with fun activities that will keep them happily engaged.

It is for this reason that we compiled several activities to keep your teen busy this summer season! We hope that these suggested activities will not only keep the boredom away, but instrumental to their development as individuals :)

Enroll them in culinary class

Learning how to prepare meals is a great way to establish independence in your teens. Although it may take a few more years for them to leave the nest, equipping them with lifelong skills in the kitchen will definitely be helpful once they reach the point that they need to live on their own. Some may opt to study abroad for college or have a place of their own once they start working. For them to learn how to cook will definitely work for their survival.

Studies also show that learning the ropes in the kitchen is therapeutic aside from it being filled with life lessons for teens. It boosts positive activity, increases goal-oriented behavior, and also effectively curbs procrastination and passivity.

Get their aprons on and sign them up for cooking or baking classes that they can attend twice or thrice a week. Make sure that they will be able to apply the lessons they will learn in your own kitchen! It will be a treat to see them prepare meals for the whole family.

Learn how to play an instrument

Whether it is learning how to play a ukulele, a violin or a piano, establishing the musicality of your teens is also a great idea for a summer activity. With so many references online that can be easily Google-ed, it is possible that your teen can also learn a new instrument completely on their own. There are tons of materials on YouTube that can parallel lessons as if it was a one-on-one session with a music teacher.

Aside from keeping your teens occupied and busy, learning and playing a musical instrument helps increase the capacity of their memory. Listening and actually playing an instrument stimulates the brain and work to increase memory power. Academically, psychologists link musical training to better mathematical ability and improved reading and comprehension skills. Learning an instrument truly is a gift that keeps on giving.

Learn a new sport

Although your teen may be itching to go to the mall and hang out with their friends, engaging them in sports also gives them a reason and opportunity to go out and socialize with their peers. The type of interaction they will learn while playing a sport is different than simply hanging out with their pals. Sports teaches teens how to interact AND work in a team, which they will definitely find useful later in life.

Plus, engaging your teen in a sports clinic will keep them healthy. Playing sports is a fantastic way to keep their physical condition in shape and at the same time, ensure that they are having fun while they are at it.

Share with them the love for art

There's more to art than just drawing, coloring, and trying to stay within the lines. Aside from opening a different type of thinking and brand of creativity, teens are at a great advantage of learning different types of skills when they are engaged with art.

Art classes teach teens project development skills. Especially when it comes to painting, it teaches them to plan and have a clear foresight as to what they want to paint before they actually start doing it. This can translate into better decision making skills once they become full-fledged adults.

With art classes, they will be able to learn different hands-on abilities, such as sketching, clay work, drawing, and other types of craft skills. Especially for teens who see themselves flourishing in creative careers when they grow up, this can set the foundation of their success once they become more seasoned in their chosen artistic fields.

Much like the benefits of art to kids, teens will also learn how to focus and concentrate on the task in front of them that needs to be finished. Their attention to detail will be sharpened and their problem solving skills will be likely improved too.
