Whether you are capturing the artwork you have proudly made or if you simply want to document your child's wonderful art journey, you need to know how to take fantastic photos of artworks. Especially now that we live in the digital age where almost anything gets a picture and uploaded on Facebook or Instagram, the wonderful creations of your hands should definitely not be an exception!

Capturing fantastic shots of your artwork does not necessarily require a professional's camera. In fact, the best camera you can use is the one you already have, which is most likely your smartphone in your back pocket!

So, how can you take those great products of your art classes?
How to Capture Great Photos of Your Artworks
The process is actually simple!

Step 1 - make sure to clean your lens! Sometimes when it gets stored in your bag or in your back pocket, the lens get a little dirty. Always use a microfiber cloth to clean the lens and smudges. This kind of fabric won't scratch delicate surfaces like your camera lens.

And in any instance that you want to take selfies with your artworks, clean the front lens too with the same microfiber cloth.

Step 2 - make sure you have ample lighting when taking a photo of your artwork. Diffused and natural lighting from the sun is always best to use. However, if natural lighting is not present, set up two lights that will crisscross each other to give your artwork even lighting. This works whether your artwork is laid flat on the floor or hung on a wall.

This type of replacement lighting also helps avoid creating casting shadows on your work!

Step 3 - if you want to take a photo of your 2D artwork, hang it or lean it against the wall and tilt your camera slightly to match the angle. Just crop out any allowance on the sides of your photo when editing.

For 3D artwork, placing it against a white background will easily make your art pop!

There are tons of photo editing tools that you can use straight on your smartphone to give your photos some finishing details making it truly ready for uploading on Facebook or on your Instagram roll. When taking artworks of your kids, make sure to take a photo while they are holding their work to commemorate a truly significant milestone in their lives. It is a testament that their art classes are paying off really well in terms of their creative maturity.

So, what about your child's works of art? What should you save and what should you do to save it properly? Because realistically, you cannot keep everything!

While it would be a great idea to have a room in your home transformed into a mini art gallery, over time, all your kid's beautiful artworks will accumulate to the hundreds!

The best solution to this is to include your child in the decision making process. Ask them the artworks they want to keep and which ones they need to let go.

Take photos of their works and instead of bringing them to the trash, donate them instead to charities, orphanages and other places where art can totally give life to an empty space!
