Arts and Academics: Inseparable Entities

Just last week, we shared an article on our Facebook page on the relationship of arts and academics. It started with the question — “What could singing lessons possibly have to do with science class? As teachers here see it, tough training in the arts is training for everything important, and it's a kind of preparation teenagers passionately want and need.” But is there really a connection between the two? How do these two converge?
Arts and Academics: Inseparable Entities

Perseverance and focus in the arts is applied in studies

Doing art whether that is making a painting, learning how to dance, engaging in a theater club all require a certain amount of perseverance to succeed. When students are harnessed to persevere in their chosen crafts, it is inevitable that this dedication is applied to their school books. With their training in the arts, they are able to apply their tenacity in science, mathematics, language and other subjects they are learning in school.

It is interesting to add too that according to a report by the Americans for the Arts, young people who participate in the arts at least 3 hours in a day on three days each week are four times more likely to be recognized for their academic achievements. They are the students who are more likely to join a math and science fair or win an award at an essay writing contest than students who do not participate.

Creativity boosts motor skills

This applies most especially for young learners who do art or play a musical instrument. The simple act of holding a paintbrush, making scribbles with a crayon or having a steady hand while drawing — all these things are essential in developing a child’s fine motor skills. Especially when kids start these activities at a really early age, they are more likely to achieve the developmental milestones (and even surpass them) expected at their level.

While there are plenty of ways to boost a child's motor skills, including art as part of it definitely offers critical benefits in the long run.

Harness collaboration

Majority of the arts, such as playing in a musical band, singing in a choir or participating in a theater production, all require kids to work together. At an early age, kids learn how to share responsibility, compromise and take accountability to achieve their common goals. When applied in a classroom setting, kids know how to collaborate with their classmates in group projects. They are most likely the students who will take on leadership roles too and motivate their classmates to do their best.
